When you become self-employed, you must first deal with administrative work — register your business and take care of taxes and insurance. That can be daunting. But once you’ve done that, the question is: What’s next? Of course, you have a business idea and plan, but what is necessary to succeed?
I have heard repeatedly: You only have to be diligent and disciplined, then success will come automatically. Ok, diligence and discipline are not my strong points. But other qualities are more critical.

Five success factors

1. Think long term
No matter what business you are in, you will usually not get orders or sell products in the first few days. It helps if you lay the foundation. If you offer services like training or consulting, you need to build trust, position yourself as a brand and create content around your topic. If you want to do reselling, you need to take care of purchasing and logistics first.

It can take months before you get your first sales. Many therefore give up in the first few weeks. Plan for a long start-up phase from the beginning. Think about where you want to be in a year, three, and ten years.
